Faith In Action

Today I spent my day with the Core Members, who are adults with special needs, at Peacehaven Community Farm.  We did some work-out activities at the YMCA gym such as basketball (my team won much to one of the Core Members chagrin) and racquetball.  The Core Members seem to have more fun with racquetball as they are not so competitive.

In the afternoon we read books we borrowed from the Burlington downtown library.  This was somewhat challenging but my cohort and boss, Adam, helped.  At one point some of the Core Members got up and left the table while another Core Member was reading.  I pointed this out to them when they returned and they didn't have much to say about it.  I am laughing as I write this because this is how they are sometimes!  We had the most fun with a mostly picture book as we all commented on the various green objects such as an anaconda, tiger eyes and grass in the shape of a spiral.

My Americorps site partner, Gina, showed up at the end of the day and we all watched an episode of Friends, a comedic TV show from the 90's, together.

After my shift was over I went home.

There was a multicultural Thanksgiving event tonight hosted by FaithAction at the First Presbyterian church in Greensboro.  This was a fun event!  There was dancing, singing, food, friends (new and existing) postcard writing to refugees in U.S. detention and also a piece of paper to write what you were thankful for for Thanksgiving.

I am thankful to be here on this Earth celebrating life and sharing the journey with you all in this time of great transformation.

The Executive Director of Faith Action, David, seemed like a really upbeat man.  I appreciated his enthusiasm.  Turning Strangers Into Neighbors is a model the non-profit employs that focuses on education, building trusting relationships, action plans to build close-knit communities and the sharing of life-changing stories via social media and other avenues like the yearly dinner this writer attended tonight.  FaithAction helps over 3000 people each year with housing, legal services, healthcare, food and many other vital services to help families new to the U.S. feel welcome and safe.

I really appreciate the time spent tonight, and today, with all my new (and existing) Greensboro and Whitsett friends.

Thank you for spending time with me here by reading this blog.  I hope you enjoyed it!
