City Council Time
Today I spoke at a city council meeting in Greensboro, NC. The council made a proclamation for December 21st to be memorial day for people who are homeless. Americorps, through the Partnership To End Homelessness and the Interactive Resource Center, will have a walk on the 18th to memorialize those who have died while homeless. It officially starts at 6 pm. There will, however, be a meal served at 4:30 if anyone wishes to join. Mayor Vaughn will speak as well as members from the Interactive Resource Center (IRC) and Partners Ending Homelessness. The walk will be fairly short, approximately one mile. One of my fellow Americorps members will read a poem at city hall and then we will return to the IRC and say our farewells.
It was nice to publicly speak today especially in front of the mayor, the city council and everyone present. Our proclamation was the second item on the agenda. The first item was about a man who recently transitioned (from the material to the non-material). He apparently was an out-spoken voice in the community. He attended many city council meetings and was well known my the council members. His son was present today to accept an honorary award recognized by the council. I remember part of his name because it reminded me of the Civil War General for the South Robert E. Lee; his name was Robert Lee Woody.
After our agenda item was over we left the meeting.
Earlier in the day I was at Peacehaven Community Farm. We were decorating the residents' house for an open house on Saturday from 3 to 5. Please join us! There will be homemade crafts, snack items and plenty of meeting and greeting. Representatives from Peacehaven will be there, Americorps members will be there and perhaps members of the Board of Directors. The core Members will be too. It will be a lot fun! It always is when the residents are involved.
After we decorated the tree, the house (inside and out) and set up the craft station a few of us went out and cut down a tree. It will be outside and bedecked with ornaments and lights. We all took a whack at the tree with an axe. Thank you Earth for providing us all that we need to celebrate our time here. Thank you tree! We really appreciate you. May twelve others grow in your stead. Twelve is the number of strands in your DNA (10 are invisible), it is the number of Jesus's apostles, it is a catalyst number in that 1 plus 2 equals 3 (3 means catalyst), and for each tree that we chop planting twelve more, or allowing twelve more to grow, cannot be a bad idea. Maybe it is a bad idea to cut it in the first place for our simple enjoyment. I do feel a sense of sorrow for having cut it down. I rationalized it in my mind that the tree is almost like a hair one the skin of a human or any other mammal. I know that not all trees will come back after having hacked it down but the image of a tree growing up from mother Earth as if it were a hair on her body seems legitimate. We did not ask the tree if we could cut it down, we just did it. I thank it now but at the time I was caught up in the moment. If it truly is like a hair then no harm no foul. If it is not then, well, we did it in the spirit of celebration. We chop trees down everyday. They are a renewable resource and can be planted to grow more. I think it is more the recognition that it is part of the Earth and part of us and to ask if we may use it for our enjoyment is being respectful. I feel complete in saying that our intention is using the tree for celebration is appropriate. I feel that the Earth's resources are here ofr us to grow in love. Growing in love means to grow in consciousness and to ask and to listen. May we listen deeply and take nothing for granted.
If you are interested, my fellow Americorps partner at Peacehaven and I and all the Core Members will be singing Christmas songs for Shoppers Day at the Burlington Mall. We go on at 10:45 am. If you want more information please ask me.
There is live gypsy jazz playing in the background.
Our society grows and exists in a measurable and confidant way because we have representatives. They help manage our growing cities and they make important decisions for us. It was nice to be a part of the process today. I must admit I do not think that I have been to a city council meeting ever until today. They meet every week at Tuesday at 5:30 at the city council building. Perhaps I will attend more. It is nice to know what is happening in our city.
Thanks every one for listening. Thank you tree and to Americorps friends. It was nice seeing you all today. Thank you city council and to people helping people.
may we know we are blessed
on this earth plane
to experience it in such a way
in the physical
our time may one day end
here on earth
we accept that it will as evidenced by nature
the cycle of living and dying and rebirth
may we know that we can leave or stay whenever we want and for as long as we like
tune into to your DNA
tell it what you want
rejuvenation is available to all
All rise
That is not how it goes at a city council meeting
a moment of silence
a pledge to the flag
a vote we can all see
clearly
may we all see clearly
into our own light
as the music plays
and the scones sell
and the musicians smile and dance with their hands and bows
time is up
in a way for it is only a measure
just a measure
your body listens to your every thought and belief
therein lies the miracle
you're in control
of it all
what happens to you
there is always a choice
you're in control of how you respond to circumstances you may find yourself in
you chose to be here
and knew of all potentials
mostly
yes, you did
then the tide turns
and we all choose
one way or the other
with each choice
each one makes
one way or the other, the other, the other
the true choice is to present with where you are
and feeling every bit of it
love is a sweet thing
and it give you chances every day to fall in love with it
for that is the very essence of existence
to fall in love with it being it
it is falling in love with yourself
and sharing it
and thank you for opening up to me
may i open up to you
here i am
and there you are
and we are together
we are separate
it matters not
we learn we discover
and the want exists
the need
the desire
the left here
with my thoughts and voice speaking through the words
i know i have to end at some point
the deepest love is one that can be shared
with yourself, with others, with the earth, with that which is unseen
stemming from the DNA and outward
to the sun
and the universe, the stars
and all the galaxies
all the planets
we are not alone
the invisible we are learning to become
seeing all of it
transitioning to the light body
and flight
and telepathy
claircognizance
all of it
energy healing
your smile
please do it some more
