Staying Focused

Here I sit in my favorite, I suppose, coffee shop.  I have not ordered anything.  There is usually always a line when I enter.  So I sit down, set up my laptop and do my thing and usually eventually order something.  I was researching ending homelessness strategies.  Nothing came as a shock, really, or new.  What did I find?  Housing first.  Instead of fighting and criminalizing homelessness, cities have begun helping.  For example, cities set up campgrounds, basically, for people.  They set up sanitation stations.  This temporary base-camp gives people a home-base to work from so they do not have to worry about where they are going to stay that night.  It does requires a tent.  Some cities used semi-trailer containers as temporary housing.

In our community in Greensboro, North Carolina there is a Tiny Home community.  It houses six residents.  I would like to see more of these.  There are plenty of vacant lots around, it seems.  Why not use these as sites to build tiny homes for folks?

I saw a temporary shelter on Facebook the other day.  It was not even standing height but it was made of wood it looked like, half of a cylinder shape and basically has enough room for a bed.  That was my version of it anyways.

Money has to come from somewhere to do this.  I know.  It's not an obstacle.  It is a priority.  When we set the priority and devote the time things get completed.  They get started.  They get ah moving.

We have to start with an attitude though of yes, it can be done.

I enjoyed the fruits today of living in my own home and having money enough to do the things I want to do.  I bought food for the Americorps potluck.  I made potato salad.  I swam.  I took the dogs for a walk and played with them.  Some of those things did not cost me a dime.  They required time though.  Sometimes time is enough.

I appreciate those that life me up.  I want to share that feeling and commitment with others.  Lifting people up.

I don't need to be practical.  Though sometimes it is necessary.  Yet, in order to get things done, as the Americorps slogan goes, we have to imagine.  We have to believe.  We have to do.  We will get nowhere if those ideals aren't in place.

It will take the commitment of the government, the people, and all the agencies dedicated to the cause.  It will take the average person too.  They will have to care and see the importance of the issue.  Truly, if we dedicated the time and energy fully to the situation people living on the streets, unless they choose to, would be over within a year in Greensboro.

Things are being done in Greensboro.  The Ten Year Plan to end homelessness, the Continuum of Care strategy, collecting data, and advocating for individuals have played a vital part in ending homelessness in Greensboro.  The number of people experiencing chronic homelessness in Greensboro in 2017 declined by 81% due to these strategies.

Yay.

I feel happy to share with you.  I think this should always be our focus as Americorps members in the Partnership to End homelessness.  The focus on solutions to end homelessness.
